Have you heard the news?
Instagram changed the feed from chronological to algorithmic.
Brace yourselves… Change is here!
A few months back, Instagram was filled with posts of accounts telling their followers to turn on notifications. Urging them to ensure they don’t miss out on any of their great posts by turning on notifications for every photo and update they make.
Posts like this flooded the feed:
I don’t know about you, but that seems a wee bit tacky.
What if I told you that you could still reach a significant amount of your fans and followers without actually yelling at them to turn on notifications? I bet you would want to read every word and maybe even take notes.
Well, today is your lucky day. Because I’m going to share with you four tactics that will help you get through the algorithm update with as little damage as possible. Let’s get to it…
Leverage & Find Relevant Hashtags
One of the primary reasons that Instagram is rolling out an algorithmic feed is ads. One of the keys to Instagram sustaining success as a platform for people to find and consume great content is relevance. The content they show you needs to be relevant. It needs to be content that you’re likely to engage with and content that Instagram feels you would connect with.
One of the ways that Instagram better understands a user’s interests is based on Hashtags. If a user likes or comments on a post with a certain hashtag, their algorithm identifies that hashtag as something of relevance to you as a user. For example, if you like a Hustle & Grind post with the hashtag #EntrepreneurLife, Instagram is going to be more likely to show you other posts with that hashtag as well.
So what does this mean?
It means you need to leverage hashtags! Don’t post on Instagram without including hashtags that are both popular and used by your target audience.
Pro Tip: Rather than including your hashtags in the caption, comment with them after you press share so your post doesn’t seem spammy.
Tag Similar Accounts In Your Content
Another way that Instagram determines whether your content is worth showing is relationships. One of the best ways for them to track relationships is monitoring the photos you’re tagged in and the accounts you tag in your photos.
It is assumed that Instagram tracks the frequency in which you’re tagging a certain user or are being tagged in content with another user. If one of your followers engages with that user’s content, it increases the chances of your content showing up in that followers feed because you have an association with another account they follow.
Always Have A Call To Action
Interaction between you and your followers is the best chance of sustaining long term engagement. If you want to keep your followers engaged, you need to leverage the power of a call to action.
A call to action is when you tell your followers exactly what you want them to do. Similar to how on a website you would tell them to “Buy Now”, on Instagram, you’re going to tell them to double tap or tag a friend below. These simple call to actions can increase the engagement on your posts and drive the level of connection you need to still show up in their feeds.
This call-to-action approach can be used regardless of your industry & account:
- Yoga Company:“Double tap if you wish you were in shavasana right now.”
- Marketing Company:“Double tap if you believe in the rise of bots.”
- Local Restaurant:“Double tap if you think you could eat this in one sitting.”
Focus On Creating Compelling Content
It might sound simple but creating compelling content is how you stand out and differentiate yourself from the crowd. We live in a world where it’s easier than ever to create content and new viral memes are created every other minute. To stand out in this sea of noise, you need to be committed to creating great content.
On Instagram, the key is to understand your audience and study the content they interact with the most. Spend some time looking at hashtags from within your industry and gain insights around the type of photos that work and the caption style that is most likely to drive engagement. If a post is listed in top posts, it’s likely that the account owners know what they’re doing.
It might feel like growing on Instagram is an uphill battle but I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be. You can grow your Instagram account like we did (@HustleGrindCo) and drive meaningful business results from your account.
