Today is the perfect day to make a change and start living your life to your fullest potential.

“There’s only one day at a time here, then it’s tonight and then tomorrow will be today again.”-  Bob Dylan

Essentially, every day is today at some point in time, and every day you are presented with an opportunity to keep the status quo or bust open the doors to your fullest potential.

Nothing in life is guaranteed. We never know what tomorrow will bring; we only have today to inform us, to inspire us and to do something with. Today is the best day for you to start your own side business because today is the best day we have.

Let me ask you this:

Are you happy building on someone else’s dream?

If your answer is no then this post will be helpful. If your answer is yes, this post will still be valuable. You see, starting a side business is a win-win move. If you’re content working your 9 to 5 with no intention of being a full-time entrepreneur, a side business can be your creative outlet, it can be a means to a dream vacation, your kid’s education or an opportunity to test the waters of a new career path.

If a side business is the first step to working solely for yourself then today is the day to start building your own dream.

It’s up to us to determine what our goals and legacy will look like. I’m here to tell you that you are capable of building something bigger than yourself – let’s start with your side hustle.

“Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t.” – Jerry Rice

Your 9 to 5 has your back!

The best time to start a side business is when you have the security and protection of a 9 to 5.

I believe that everyone working in the 9 to 5 should have their own side hustle. Yes, a side hustle is like a second job, but if you pick the right one it won’t feel like work and will have no negative impact on your 9 to 5.

For me, whether I was studying in University or working full-time, I’ve always had a side hustle on the go. In University I sold football jerseys online and while working the 9-5 I was creating unique experiences for young professionals. My side businesses have always been a creative outlet and an opportunity for me to top up my skills and learn something new.

Having a 9 to 5 in my corner gave me the flexibility and freedom to experiment with my side gigs without the stress and pressure of committing to full-time entrepreneurship. Here are a few reasons why starting a side business today is the right move:

Being uncomfortable is good for you

This was the first lesson I learned as a young kid starting my first side hustle. I was shy, preferred to keep to myself and rarely ventured outside of my comfort zone. But I soon realized that if I wanted to be the best version of myself, if I wanted to make my own success and live to my fullest potential, I’d need to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

This isn’t a skill or life experience that you can plan for. It’s a leap you have to take and today is the day to do it. It’s time to break out of your comfort zone because when we are uncomfortable we are most successful. Elon Musk, someone who I’ve mentioned before on the Hustle & Grind blog, said it well:

“When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favour.”

Rules are meant to be broken

Whether its rules are etched it the books you’ve read and the lectures you’ve observed, or the unwritten rules inside your head that hide behind fears and uncertainties, break them apart, tear them down and throw them out.

Make your own rules, set your own boundaries and destroy those too. After all, rules are meant to broken.

Live freely and forwardly. Don’t be afraid to do something that will improve your life just because somewhere, someone or something says you shouldn’t. You owe it to yourself to push forward and make your dreams come true.

Practice makes perfect

Starting a side business requires you to consistently learn and gain new knowledge. When you work for yourself, you don’t really have a choice. Each decision you make, every client you acquire and each risk you take will teach you something new.

Furthermore, building a business helps you attain new skills that will ultimately carry you from one adventure to the next. Why wait for these experiences to fall in your lap? The truth is, these are the kinds of experiences that rarely do. It takes action on your part, dedication, and enthusiasm to grow and develop at the helm of your own business.

Start your side business today and begin mastering your craft so that when (or if) you branch off to become your own boss you’ll have the skills, confidence, and experience you need to be successful.

Learn about yourself

It’s time to focus on yourself and do something that makes you happy. Far too often we get stuck in the grind of our 9 to 5 and forget about our own dreams and passions in life. We let that ship sail and we push through our careers without ever looking back.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Your side business can offer you the freedom to explore what you enjoy. It can begin as nothing more than a passion project or an exploration of a long-held interest or hobby. The point is, your side hustle will bring you more happiness than grief along the way. You’ll wake up excited to do it and gain a lot of satisfaction from it.

Do something today that your future self will thank you for.

Investing in you

If you’re not willing to invest in yourself, no one else will.

In life, we often put others first.

Our family, our employer, our friends…we rarely focus on our own wants, needs, and desires. But researchers and successful entrepreneurs agree that the surest way to self-fulfillment and the highest quality of life begins with investing in ourselves. In fact, it’s probably the most profitable investment you can make.

Building a side business should be for you, not for anyone else. It should meet your needs, inspire your life, and fulfill your dreams. From developing new skills to taking on interesting and challenging new projects, investing in your knowledge will result in massive returns.

In your early days, your most amazing projects and clients might not pay as much, but it’s important to take on work that will help differentiate you from the crowd and give you the skills and satisfaction you need to keep hustling.

The important thing to remember is that your side hustle can be as big or small as you’d like, as long as it’s the right fit for you and your life.
