Most people use Twitter for following celebrities, athletes, and their friends.
What most people don’t realize is that Twitter is a channel that can change your life.
It’s a channel that can open new doors. It’s a channel where you can build new relationships. It’s a channel that can give you an opportunity to live the life of your dreams.
Most people don’t know how to get more followers on Twitter. Most people want more followers on Twitter but are constantly struggling to get their numbers to increase month by month.
It’s not easy but anyone can build a following of thousands.
But how?
I’ve grown my personal Twitter account from a couple hundred people to thousands over the last few years. In the process, I’ve been able to build new relationships with people and unlock opportunities that have allowed me to fly around the world and work with brands I’ve always dreamed of working with.
Twitter is a tool that can help you connect with almost anyone, anywhere at any time. It’s a channel that breaks down borders and allows you to connect with people on a global scale.
In this post, I’m going to share with you a few strategies and tips that will help you grow your following. You’ll learn how to get more Twitter followers and how to keep them following long term.
Let’s dive in.
Think about the accounts that you follow and why you follow them.
It’s likely that you follow them because you’re interested in the stuff they share. Your followers will feel the same way about the content that you share.
If you’re constantly sharing content about sports, you’ll build an audience with an interest in sports. If you’re constantly sharing content about the local market, you’ll build an audience locally. If you’re sharing content about marketing, you’ll build an audience of marketers.
You are the content you share. The content you distribute on Twitter will influence the perception that you give off to people and their opinion. Share content on topics you want to be associated with your name and you’ll start to build a following from folks within that space.
A lot of people think it’s cheesy but guess what…
It works.
Studies show that people share content that makes them laugh or feel inspired. The top emotions are amusement, interest, surprise, happiness, and delight.
If your account can make people feel these emotions, it’s likely that your tweets will be retweeted and give you a chance to reach a broader audience. This is why parody & inspirational accounts have thousands of followers on Twitter. Injecting a bit of this into your own personal account is a great way to achieve more reach.
Twitter isn’t a place where you should simply broadcast your own message day in and day out.
Instead, you should use Twitter as a channel to build relationships with others and connect with other users on a personal level. It might sound weird or even feel weird at first but it can lead you to establish strong relationships that can last a lifetime.
If someone asks for a book recommendation, answer them. If someone asks a question about whether they should eat at one place or another, give them advice.
One conversation on Twitter can result in a new relationship that opens new doors and new opportunities. Engage often and build trust with both your current followers and those who you aspire to build a relationship with in the future.
This is a hack that can help you increase your followers fairly quickly.
You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.
That’s a philosophy that can truly benefit you as you try to grow your following. It’s also a philosophy that is one of the unwritten but often executed rules of Twitter usage.
If you’re constantly sharing the content from a popular account, it’s likely that they’ll eventually take notice. Your photo will constantly show up in their notifications and they’ll eventually investigate to see who you are and what you’re all about.
At this point, they might follow you back or even share something that you’ve shared in the past.
Here’s an example of me quoting a larger account – It generated 38 retweets and 64 favorites:

Sharing content from popular accounts is a great opportunity to be retweeted and placed in front of a larger audience than your own.
If you find an article or quote from a large account who has a following similar to the folks who you want to connect with, share it and mention them. The account might retweet your tweet placing you in front of their already significant audience and giving you the chance to gain new followers.
Thousands of people have already changed their life by using Twitter effectively.
If you take these strategies and add on a layer of hustle, you could also open an entirely new world for yourself. The biggest benefit of getting more followers on Twitter isn’t the ego-boost. The biggest benefit is the relationships you establish with people and the possibilities that can come from those new relationships.
